Review of The Boondock Saints (1999) by Compi24 — 07 Nov 2018
Famous for having one of the greatest disparities of opinion between both critics and fans, Troy Duffy's "The Boondock Saints" feels almost like a movie with a Jekyll & Hyde syndrome ailing it.
You get the MacManus brothers on their crusade for justice, which is fine. It's nothing particularly new. The violence is loud, brash, and impersonal. The religious undertones are tried and only semi-true.
But -- oh, man -- does Willem Dafoe bring it in this movie as the FBI agent pursuing the brothers' controversial plight. He simply acts circles around every other performer in this movie and it doesn't even stop there -- the dialogue and scene dynamics almost instantaneously improve every time he's onscreen.
It's such a weird phenomenon and it honestly made the movie that much better for me. A good watch, overall.
