Review of The Book Thief (2013) by Bob W — 25 Apr 2014
I sincerely have some hesitation giving this a bad review. But I think the source young adults book (or the small part of it I actually read) strikes a different tone despite the same story. The stirring plot from the book is here overwhelmed with overtly sentimental and beautiful fairy tale like direction that fails to move and shock as it must.
The actors are fine and well cast, but the light plaintive tone doesn't make it seem very real at all--more magical and nostalgic than doleful and moral.
