Review of The Book of Life (2014) by Josue O — 04 Nov 2014
I'll be totally honest here. After watching Book of Life, several songs were stuck in my head- and I had a whole new understanding of the DAy of the Dead. The story may seem cliche, yes. But my little siblings (9, 12 and 12) LOVED the movie, and so did my parents (and grandparents).
So yes, it may seem cliche and locked in the 'Toy Story Model'... but it's an exciting and breathtaking arena to challenge. The detail provided in the story is wonderful; the delinquent children who are learning the story turn from nasty little ratkids to wonderful, respectful children who all together respect La Meurte and Xibalba by the end of the story.
The characters are well conceived; the girl is not the typical 'help me help me I'm a damsel in distress' kind of girl, and both boys are totally ignorant on how to truly win her heart. I found the movie wonderful; the protest against animal cruelty, the true feminist view, the two boys who never really grew up.
I hope to see more come from this producer.
