Review of The Book of Life (2014) by Mohammad R — 13 Jan 2015
The Book of Life has solid characterization, fine soundtrack, engaging plot, quite solid humor, great world-building and emotional presence, but the highlight is definitely its animation which is incredibly authentic, thankfully very different and a rare computer animated film that honestly has a different visual style and it should set an example for other CGI films to follow.
The tone should have been darker, the editing is problematic, the pacing is too frenetic and the plot progression is not handled perfectly, but it is a film that makes use of its plot and setting in a great way with great Mexican feel to it and charming humor and characters.
It may be typical in the storytelling department, but it is a technically very refreshing and most original animated film of the year.
