Review of The Book of Life (2014) by Karla E — 28 Jan 2015
As everyone else has already stated, the movie has beautiful visuals, but awful audio. The hero has an obvious Mexican accent while the other male character has an American jock accent and personality.
The movie tries too hard to be hip & appeal to younger audiences. I loved the Mexican mythology incorporated into the film, but it tries too hard to include American elements into the film which just didn't work and instead felt awkward.
The most detestable aspect of this film was the singing- they remade popular American pop songs to sound more Mexican and the result was awful awful music. I think it'd have been better if they had included more hispanic songs.
It felt like the movie couldn't make up its mind about whether it wanted to be a Mexican film or an American film. I'm not sure that I could recommend this movie to anyone older than 10. The story was slightly above average at most as well.
