Review of The Bonfire of the Vanities (1990) by Eric R — 14 Aug 2010
I don't really get why this film has such a ridiculously low rating by critics and consumers alike. I suppose it may have to do with all the stories of how terrible filming went and all the catastrophe's which took place on set.
It also may have to do with the fact that DePalma seemed to want to create a film that was just as much drama and less satire, which did bother me to some degree; but its still just pretty damn fun. Kim Cattrall is absolutely dreadful in this film and Tom hanks was pretty miscasted as well.
The film though does move at a strong steady pace, and although not one of his best, DePalma still injects some good style and camerawork throughout the film. There are some hilarious satirically moments throughtout the film, which had me laughing my ass off but I assume it just never reached the high expectations of the original film.
Its not great by any means, but its not nearly as bad as the hype would lead you to believe. I enjoyed it.
