Review of The Bonfire of the Vanities (1990) by Dave R — 28 Sep 2010
Hanks plays a guy who "has it all" and then must watch it all unravel after taking a wrong turn - literally.
This film seems to have a bad reputation - why i'm not sure. I haven't read the book so I don't know how it compares but I imagine it would be better. the film wasn't horrible but it didn't strike the right tone with me. it sometimes felt like a light comedy on the surface but I felt it should have been more serious. another problem for me was the casting - hanks, griffith, willis... all horribly miscast. depalma's hand is easy to spot - all his familiar shots are in this.
As for critiques of 80s shallowness nothing beats "american psycho" in my book - whether it's the book or the movie, they're both great.
