Review of The Blues Brothers (1980) by Tony P — 13 Nov 2009
The Blues Brothers makes entertainment out of excess, a feat not easily accomplished without coming off as tacky or dumb. But the uplifting music and comedic precision of John Landis' direction makes this the completely pleasurable exception.
With its unique fusion of music, adventure, and adult humor, Blues Brothers is as soulful is it gets in the realm of commercial entertainment. The plot is thin, muttled, pretty much pointless, but the lovability of the duo and the Peter Gunn Theme cover up any faults.
With style, stupendous cameos, nuns and Nazis, cops and cowboys, ridiculous car stunts, and an impossibly great soundtrack this over-the-top treasure is certainly the greatest SNL to film adaptation out there.
