Review of The Blue Max (1966) by Nick G — 29 May 2007
The flying scenes are by and large great. There are a few dodgy moments, but not enough to be troublesome. The story is a bit messed up too, but two things make this a great film: firstly it is the first time the sheer celebrity that fighter pilots had to endure in WW1 (for being good at killing people, let;s face it), comes across loud and clear.
Secondly James Mason's portrayal of the values, morals and beliefs of the men who headed the Kaiser;s armed forces elevates the whole production several notches higher than it deserved.
