Review of The Blue Angel (1930) by Dave J — 08 Jun 2011
Von Sternberg beautifully captures one man's moral decline in this intriguing character study. Dietrich's sexually unrestrained showgirl is unforgettably radiant and the film makes excellent use of elaborate sets, expressionistic visuals and eccentric characters.
As the very first collaboration between Von Sternberg and Dietrich, this early talkie is a powerful cinematic achievement, blending romance and occasional humour with poignant drama. This Weimar cinema classic is entertaining, wonderfully constructed and highly unlikely to disappoint.
