Review of The Bling Ring (2013) by Amy M — 24 Jan 2014
This is a film that's only interesting if you come in with an open mind to understand and wrangle with the subtext and psychological underpinnings of the characters and their behavior. If you just want protagonists you can easily like and follow on Hollywood adventures, I don't think you'll get this movie.
That being said, it's still only a slightly better than average film experience IMO. The plot and character development just don't go far enough. It plays more like a entertainment tonight news segment or a documentary, showing you what happened, but not really getting much below the surface of what it all means to these teenagers, their families, the victims of their crimes, or us.
There are solid performances from the young cast and some fun scenes to watch. I just wish it all added up to something more emotionally. No standout filmmaking craft either. I'd give the movie a watch once if it at all interests you.
