Review of The Bling Ring (2013) by Andy G — 20 Sep 2013
Updated: I smiled all the way through the opening scenes of The Bling Ring, both in theatres and at home. Isn't it exciting? We see surveillance-style footage of some SoCal teens breaking into a rich celeb's home, walking in an open door, and raiding closets of Balmain and Chanel. With Sleigh Bells's "Crown on the Ground" playing intensely in the background, it's clear the editors of the film knew what effect was being made on the audience.
If only the rest of the film lived up to its first scene. Really, the movie has so much potential and I think Sofia Coppola must have realized that. But by some bad casting choices (Emma Watson, Leslie Mann), some insufferably obvious writing ("Where are we going?" "Anywhere we want.") and some odd timing, the movie has some trouble.
In my heart there is a reserved place for Coppola's films. The Bling Ring will reside there, but I must admit its faults.
Old (6/28/13): 3.5/5.
Reflective of an entire culture. Reflective of an entire country, for all I know.
