Review of The Bling Ring (2013) by Mimi S — 07 May 2014

I was desperate to see this film for ages, but I was actually really disappointed. The only one in the cast that shines is Emma Watson; I found the rest of the actors (who I have never heard of) unmemorable and unimpressive. This film just lacks substance and is a pretty empty watch. The Bling Ring is based on real life events; of a gang that were obsessed with the lifestyles of the rich and famous would break into celebrities homes and steal their things. I really don't get why this was really made into a film, all that happens is the kids steal and get arrested. The end. There's no character development and like the RT census of the Bling Ring says, "fails to delve beneath the surface of it's shallow protagonists' real life crimes.".

I really thought that this film would be good but it's just one of those films that isn't memorable and the only thing that keeps it afloat is Emma Watson. She was really fantastic in this; she's a really versatile actress. She had a lot of energy and really immerses herself into the role of an extremely manipulative, fame obsessed girl who despite her crimes tries to convince everybody that she's an angel. Plus her American accent was pretty good. I really respect Emma Watson as an actress; I really don't know what she was doing in a film with unknown actors who are wooden amateurs who can't act. One of the few positives are is the film was an interesting insight into the world of fame and money obsessed and vacuous teenagers, constantly taking selfies and posting their glamorous lives through social media. You can definitely say that the Bling Ring is relevent to the society that we live in. All in the all this film was bland and felt empty and wooden. Worth a watch but its no big deal.
