Review of The Bling Ring (2013) by Caz H — 06 Nov 2013
Sofia Coppola is one of my favourite directors/writers and her films are always beautifully shot: a visual and aural treat. They also always feel authentic. In this movie I found it harder to identify, empathise or even think about all the characters as they were so shallow and superficial but there were moments of sadness and understanding, particularly with the characters or Marc and Rebecca whose performances I particularly enjoyed.
I feel she did well to present a topic from a generally distanced and non-judgemental viewpoint which meant you were able to experience it from a variety of angles and make up your own opinion. Sofia always shows rather than tells.
I feel modern obsession with materialism and celebrity culture really concerning so this was definitely an interesting and entertaining watch, especially when I caught myself almost rooting for them and not wanting them to get caught.
