Of the film brat filmmakers from the 70s--Coppola, Scorsese, De Palma, Spielberg, Ballard--arguably the least prolific and yet most heedlessly talented is Ballard, and this is his masterpiece. Fable and fantasy, beauty and beast, boy and his horse--you can't get more elemental than that.
