Pure corn in terms of story and character -- but my God, the design is extraordinary, one of the most beautiful science-fiction films of the 70s. This is a sterling example of what CGI can never replace: flawlessly rendered matte paintings, palpable, intricate model work, clever optical effects.
The primary spacecraft looks like a sea galleon set adrift in the stars, John Barry's score is excellent. And the actors! Anthony Perkins, Robert Forster and Ernest Motherfucking Borgnine... Hell yes.
