Review of The Black Hole (1979) by Adrian Z — 11 Jan 2012
2 - Certainly timed to cash in on Star Wars, but more reminiscent to Disney's own adaptations of Jules Verne novels from the 1950s, or even more so to Irwin Allen's "Lost in Space". That tone can be alluring, but ultimately one has to realize that the major problem with "The Black Hole" is that it is dull and boring.
To that you add other minor problems: wooden acting, thin plot, awful script, etc. These would be things you can get away with in SF as long as it's entertaining. The special effects (which were very expensive) range from those that look really great, to those that are cheesy or let down by the antiquated cinematography.
John Barry's repetitive score is done in his typical style, which doesn't match the film (or the leitmotif driven genre). Nothing seems to work well enough to give it a passing grade.
