Review of The Black Balloon (2008) by Neil P — 30 Mar 2008
Where to start...
I really wanted to like this film, the topic (essentially the trials and tribulations of an autistic kid, and the interplay with his family) was undoubtedly a story worth telling. The two lead actors (Wakefield, Ford, three if you include Toni Collette) gave great, compelling performances.
But what, why, HOW was Gemma Ward cast in this film ? it was just plain weird. Her performance wasn't bad, as such, but this whole story line (which I assume was the fictional bit in a semi auto/biographical plot) just, well, lost the plot for me.
I walked out, and can't remember the last time I did so.
It had so much potential.
