Review of The Bishop's Wife (1947) by N F — 25 Jan 2011
I saw about 20 mins of this on tv 2 Christmas's ago & it mesmerized me! It was in the middle, so I DVR'd the next showing, but it mysteriously disappeared. I tried Netflixing it this Christmas, but it was on "long wait." Now I finally got it. And I must say I'm a little split on it. First off, I absolutely adored Cary Grant. He captures the screen; such a charmer!!! It was a fun story line and I enjoyed the premise.
SPOILER ALERT BELOW. ;).
I just didn't care for the fact that he fell in love with the wife. I know this is just a lighthearted Christmas flick, so I guess I might be "overreacting," but it felt more like an affair than whimsy when they were ice skating. Just didn't sit right for me. Didn't feel very angelic in some moments. Especially the way the wife would look at him! I know the idea was for him to make the Bishop jealous so he would re-realize his love for his wife... but, it just felt kind of uncomfortable for me when we see him fall in love with her. And I think if she hadn't told him to leave in the end, he would have blown all his good work and whisked her away from the Bishop! How's that for a Christmas story?!? ;P Would love to hear thoughts from someone else who's seen this.... (1-25-11).
