Review of The Birth of a Nation (2016) by Greg D — 08 Oct 2016
Loved this informative and captivating movie. It's definitely one of the best I've seen this year. The storytelling was great and the actors phenomenal. Nate Parker needs to be commended on a job well done! I was encouraged to think about a few things in ways I previously have not, such as the origin of religion in the lives of African Americans. I always found it strange that African American slaves were lynched if caught reading, or later even attempting an education, yet they were allowed to read the bible. Enslavers didn't seem to mind their reading or learning anything they thought would contribute to a slave's "obedience" and submissiveness. I also appreciated the education the movie provides on Nat Turner. I knew very little about him because unfortunately in America we are only told half the story of this country's slavery history, and much of that half story isn't even true because much of White America does not want to fully acknowledge the role African Americans have played in building this nation. They also don't want to fully acknowledge the hatred ,ugliness and immoral behavior White America has exacted upon people of color both around the world and even in their own country.
This nation's birth defect (racism) needs is in dire need of treatment but by refusing to acknowledge that a defect even exists there will be no healing, in fact, the very opposite may result, a downfall. The "Birth of a Nation" attempts to patch up some of the holes missing when mainstream discusses America's history and it does so in a way that is both gripping and thought provoking.
