Review of The Birth of a Nation (2016) by Andrew O — 11 Oct 2016
As a film, it's good looking and powerful, but as a historical retelling it's both extremely inaccurate (his wife was never raped, a key plot point) and euphemistic (these men murdered a baby in its cradle), and thus its artistic argument comes to a halt when portraying what could've been a rageful anti-hero doing the only thing he thought he could into a Christ-figure, who seemingly did no wrong despite all the deaths he caused.
