Review of The Birth of a Nation (2016) by Michael J — 04 Oct 2016
What I find interesting about some of the disheartening comments surrounding this necessary story being told is this...whenever a new movie is made about the Jewish holocaust, it is celebrated cinematically and most of them have been garnered Academy Award nominations and wins.
Someone wrote that due to the manner by which Nat Turner rebelled, he shouldn't be celebrated as a hero. Well, you have a right to your opinion...but consider this...
Look at the number of American historical personalities who have been granted hero status in print and in film, while many of them were some of the most ruthless human beings ever to walk the earth.
Both races Black and White suffer from the inherited, untreated traumas of what the maniacal, financial and legal institution of slavery did psychologically, emotionally and spiritually. Now is the time for not only historical depictions such as this to be told but, it's also time to encourage discussion in order to begin the long overdue healing process.
Birth of a Nation is a must see!
