Review of The Birth of a Nation (2016) by Michael M — 13 Oct 2016
The film does little to add to the depth of the character, Nat Turner; albeit, while giving a small skewed slice of what totally brutal and inhumane treatments that really existed for non-white peoples of the USA.
I realize that the reality and brutality associated with this period can not be fully displayed because this does not sell tickets. The constant murder and rape of individuals was hourly; not daily or yearly.
To display white people's savagery as it was will certainly be the death of any cinematic creation due to the sub human aspects of most of their behaviors. With that being said, at least there is a glimmer of reality in that some aspects are touched upon; yet, the character of Nat Turner really did not have any depth as far as I am concerned.
