Review of The Birth of a Nation (1915) by Stephen L — 28 Mar 2010
Wow, I'm not usually stirred by controversy, but this is just hilariously one-sided. I really hope D.W. Griffith wasn't serious when he made this. what make things worse is that Gus, one of the negatively portrayed black men, isn't even played by a Black actor, he's a white man with make-up, that's just bad.
the racism is part of what makes this movie memorable but luckily, it doesn't over-shadow the fact that this is a groundbreaking technical achievement in film making.
