Review of The Birth of a Nation (1915) by Paul J — 23 Jun 2012
Despite its controversy, you gotta hand it to Griffith, he revolutionized movies. If you can get past the racist elements of the film, the cinematic vocabulary is everything we take for granted now. He wrote the textbook and all the techniques that we still use today show up in this film.
It was the first major film to prove to audiences (and studios) that cinema was here to stay. It told a STORY. Epic, powerful and based on true events. Indirectly, it influenced practically every movie ever made.
