One hundred years later, Lillian Gish is still captivating, the tech is still groundbreaking, and the second act is still appalling. They should hand out pins that say "I Survived The Birth of a Nation" at every screening of this film.
How Griffith could be artistically advanced and so ideologically primitive remains one of cinema's great mysteries.
