Review of The Birth of a Nation (1915) by Josh W — 29 Nov 2006
Wow, I really did not expect this. An incredibely controversial and bold movie, even for today's standarts. I do not believe in taking films as historical facts, but this definitely presented me personaly with a view I was previously unaware of. Things are definitely not as black and white (excuse the irony) when it comes to the KKK, as so many would convince you to believe. On technical terms I really enjoyed the music and the battle scenes, some of which were really captivating. The story the movie tried to tell though was really epic, and it did not always use it's three-hour length efficiently. Some parts in the middle did feel a bit irrelevant when so much more could have been fitted in.
A real eye-opener that is important in more than one level.
