Review of The Birdcage (1996) by Matthew H — 29 Aug 2014
"The Birdcage" is about a gay couple played by the late Robin Williams and Nathan Lane. Robin Williams owns a drag queen bar in which Nathan Lane performs. Together with the help of a surrogate, they have a son, who announces he's engaged to a State Senator's daughter (played by Celesta Flockhart). His family is laid back and relaxed while hers is all about reputation and image. So what will happen when the two families meet?
Based on the Broadway show, this adaptation is definately worth seeing. Although it's not a haha type funny, it's a chuckle funny that sends a positive message about being true to yourself. Most of the humor is family friendly and should appeal to almost anyone. It is by far one of Robin Williams' best roles and I wish he did more with Nathan Lane as they were excellent foils for each other!
