Review of The Big Year (2011) by Jessi H — 24 Aug 2012
This movie surprised me! It started out a little slow, but gradually, the characters grab your attention. I think this movie had more heart than hilarity. It wasn't rude or stupid humor either! It was situational and smartly diaglogued humor. And it wasn't just a slapstick focused on the bird hunt. It was more about three characters and their lives as well as how this passion affects their lives and loved ones. The story never went too far like having a spouse cheat on the other when temptation arose or missing out on seeing the just-born grandchild. But it did give you enough to feel the emotional impact as choices were made. It was sweet actually! Black wasn't just a gross overweight guy, he was the "every man" who innocently dives into an intense competition.
In terms of the movie details, the settings are mesmerizing, traveling to Attu Island, Alaska, all the way across to Maine. The music was quirky and added to the movie's fun. It was a fun movie! The casting is great throughout from sassy tour guide captain Huston to grumbly father-figure Dennehy who manages to open his heart to this strange dream of his son. Great comedic actors all around who provide more than just humor but emotional depth as well. And I'm a big fan of Steve Martin! He's always great!
The story will make you ponder your priorities and dreams. So its a funny and thoughtful movie -- much better than I expected from the trailers. Nothing was predictable in the plot either! Bonus! I expected a generic obsession-riddled plot with characters who are constantly at odds -- instead I got touching, uplifting, heart-rending, and honest with redeeming characters. Bravo! For some the ending is bittersweet. For others, their lives have been enriched and relationships strengthened. Very, very good and well made.
