Review of The Big Steal (1949) by Jacob O — 02 Jan 2011
Don Siegel's "The Big Steal" is a misjudged film. It's been billed as a film noir, but it doesn't really fall into that category. The whole takes place in sunny Mexico, as Robert Mitchum and Jane Greer chase down $300,000 in their blue automobile.
While the car chasing sequences are fun to watch, the film is dogged down by a major marketing mistake - most releases on DVD are pointless colourised versions of the film, which take away much of the character and atmosphere of the B/W original.
Nothing particularly memorable here, but it's been mistreated over the years.
