The Big Sick is based on the funny, tender & often awkward true story of Kumail Nanjiani's & Emily V. Gordon's intercultural romance. Kumail (playing himself) is a young Pakistani comedian living in Chicago & trying to make it big in the industry while driving for Uber when he isn?t performing on stage. At one of Kumail?s performances, he meets Emily Gardner (Zoe Kazan,) a vocal member of the audience. The two begin a conversation that leads to an intended one-night affair that unexpectedly blossoms into a deepening relationship. However, as the relationship progresses, Emily is beginning to sense there is something Kumail isn't telling her. When she discovers a small cigar box full of the photos of Pakistani woman, Kumail then explains to Emily the tradition of arranged marriages in his culture & Emily realizes that he hasn't told his family about her & that there is little chance of a future together. Emily is heartbroken & she & Kumail go their separate ways. When Kumail unexpectedly receives a late night call from Emily's roommate informing him that Emily is in the hospital, Kumail arrives to find that the situation is grave & the doctors must put Emily in a medically-induced coma. After calling Emily?s parents to inform them that Emily is in the hospital, Kumail meets Beth & Terry (Holly Hunter & Ray Romano) who are not happy with him for having broken their daughter's heart. During Emily's extended stay in the hospital, Kumail, Beth & Terry begin negotiating their own tenuous relationship which gradually evolves into a deep bond. During this process, Kumail gains an awareness of the depth of his feelings for Emily & a new appreciation for family that enables him to stand up to his own parents. Directed by Michael Showalter from screenplay written by Kumail Nanjiani & Emily V. Gordon, The Big Sick is a beautiful love story: funny, touching & heartwarming. The performances from the cast were phenomenal. The chemistry between Kumail & Zoe was heartfelt & believable. The Big Sick is a MUST-SEE FILM.
