Review of The Big Sick (2017) by Byron B — 15 Jan 2019
I saw this long before catching up on the HBO sitcom Silicon Valley, which co-stars Nanjiani. The incredibly funny and smart script of The Big Sick was co-written by real-life couple Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V.
Gordon based on their real relationship and culture clash of their families. With Apatow and Showalter's comic chops leading the way the cast performs well. Kumail and Emily (played by the adorable Zoe Kazan) command the screen with a full-range of emotions.
We also see a representation of Kumail's stand-up career and of course we meet his family and her's. The character Emily has a health problem that puts her in a coma, so that Kumail has to figure out how serious his feelings for her are and he has to win over her parents.
There are lots of laughs and some scenes that nudge you toward tears. This is a great addition to the romcom genre.
