Review of The Big Sick (2017) by James R — 22 Jan 2018
A very cute story about a Pakistani born man named Kumail (Kumail Nanjiani) who begins to date a white woman named Emily (Zoe Kazan). Kumail's family has constantly been trying to hook him up with an arranged marriage, but Kumail just isn't into it.
On top of it all he keeps Emily a secret from them for quite some time. Emily eventually finds out that Kumail has been keeping her secret and the two break it off. A short time later Emily gets very sick and Kumail is the only one around to sign off to put her into a medically induced coma.
In come Emily's parents Beth (Holly Hunter) and Terry (Ray Romano). They don't exactly like Kumail (especially Beth) because of what Emily told them what had happened recently. It's up to Kumail to gain the trust and love from Emily's family as well as explain to his family exactly what he wants in life! It's a nice little drama with some funny moments that are actually based on Nanjiani's real life romance with his wife.
It has a lot of heart and I especially thought the second half was the stronger half with it being a lot more dark and dramatic. I liked the performances a lot and I enjoyed the film quite a bit overall.
Definitely, give this one a look especially if you have Amazon Prime (if so it's free!).
