Gutsy is not usually a word used to express romcoms but in this case it works because the story is less about the relationship between the featured couple and more about the relationship between the woman's parents and her estranged boyfriend.
They are forced together because of the woman's big sick and Holly Hunter and Ray Romano (not the couple pairing you would've imagined) do so well as the woman's parents. A surprise pleasure from outta nowhere.
