Review of The Big Sick (2017) by Darryl L — 02 Jul 2017
A funny movie that I think in these Trump presidential times, everyone needs to see.
I guess you can call this "Guess Who's Coming To Dinner" of the new century. Just switch out a black man for a Pakistani man. The sentiment is the same. If you love someone it shouldn't matter what color you are.
Anyway, politics aside, this movie is entertaining and the characters are likable. Kumail Nanjiani and Zoe Kazan have wonderful chemistry. Ray Romano and Holly Hunter are funny and warm. Sometimes I wonder when Romano going to stop playing that "Everyone Loves Raymond" character. He's a smart and funny guy, but he appears so small. Hunter is a force of nature that almost steals the movie.
Special shout out to the group of actors who play Nanjiani's family and friends. They were so real.
I think I would watch this movie again if I saw it on late at night on a premium channel. It's definitely a good date movie. It made me feel good about my marriage. More important, it gave me a warm feeling about my sister in law. Though a staunch Republican (an area where we clashed in the beginning of our relationship), I admire her because she's a strong woman, who would fight for her family to the death. And that's what Holly Hunter's character does.
Anyway...this is movie deserves your attention. You will leave with a smile on your face.
