Review of The Big Short (2015) by Amanda C — 29 May 2016
The world of stocks and high finance has never been so entertaining or so accessible. The Big Short does a fantastic job of taking the complicated layers of the US housing/stock market crash and distilling it into plain language.
The result is probably the most gut-wrenching film of 2015 because when you understand what's really going on, you realize we are all being swindled and screwed over everyday by the people who have designed and run the system.
More importantly, The Big Short manages to make something that is usually about as interesting as watching paint dry and makes it entertaining, leveraging the smooth cool of Ryan Gosling and the sex appeal of Margot Robbie.
Director Adam McKay has crafted a slick, star fueled romp that manages to be fun, entertaining, informative and ultimately devastating.
