Review of The Big Short (2015) by Justin C — 06 Jul 2016
I'm speechless. This film hits every note that a Best Picture contender needs to hit. Once again, Bale's often underrated acting range is showcased beautifully. Steve Carrell manages to elicit almost every emotion that the human brain I capable of processing and the guy that directed Anchor Man put together maybe the smartest film that I've ever seen. It manages to be hilarious while, at the same time, making you feel the tragedy of the 2008 world economic colapse as well as the appropriate amount of anger toward the Wall Street crooks who were/are responsible for it. what really makes this film a home run for me, though, is the educational value within the script.
If I didn't have a degree in finance, I'd have no idea why the housing market or the economy collapsed because for some reason, no main media outlet has ever bothered to explain the first thing about it in the eight years since it happened. The film even includes why I'm an awesome and terrifying scene with a Wall Street Journal reporter who doesn't want to upset any of the perpetrators because some of them are the ones that write his paychecks. If I had any critisim at all, I would just point out that Brad Pitt once again plays Brad Pitt. I can't say enough great things about this brilliant piece of art.
