Review of The Big Short (2015) by Margarita S — 05 Sep 2016
This is a stylistically and topically interesting film that just doesn't quite go the extra mile. Performances are really solid and the movie is well-paced and engaging. What it lacks though is any great analysis.
Its bitter cynicism masquerades as insight, but really it's just an uninspired cop out. Sure, it raises a few questions here and there about the moral integrity of trying to make money off of the collapse of the housing market, but it doesn't actually sink its teeth into running with this angle.
That's a shame since it could've been so much more than just an "here's-what-happened-let-me-explain-it-to-you-in-a-user-friendly-way" exercise of a film.
