Review of The Big Short (2015) by Hanneguacamole — 22 Jan 2016
Rarely have I seen a movie that makes me so utterly angry and disgusted. And I believe that's what The Big Short was trying to do. It understood that we don't understand this economic crisis and its cause and ran with it, dumbing the topic down with humor. While at times jumbled, the movie still made me question whose side I was on. That of the ridiculously greedy bankers, hoodwinking the American people? Or those "outsiders" that wanted this corruption to end? But only because they would become filthy rich.).
Truly a moral dilemma, one that I would never want to be a part of. This utter greed and disregard was revolting and that's how it was displayed. Lavish trips to Las Vegas, not bothering to check the CDOs... And it's still happening, 8 years and many hardships later. But on the side of the film, not the topic, The Big Short gave interesting perspective. I don't think the movie could have survived without the explanations that doubled as comedic relief, yet they were placed just so the audience was not completely lost.
Star-studded as it may be, The Big Short doesn't follow big money. Going against the grain with no truly likable characters is never easy, and they nearly pulled it off. All that seemed to be missing was a real story – a tie that could connect the four individual men.
