(1980) The Big Red One.
WAR/ DRAMA/ COMEDY/.
Directed by Samuel Fuller, an already accomplished director who also served the same unit infantry called "The Big Red One", this is a retelling about his war expriences reflected through another narrator, mostly focusing on the Lee Marvin character in charge of the unit, known as the 'The Sergent' mostly leading a group of kids who barely got out of high school and their many war experiences from Africa, France and Germany among other places during WWII! Sometimes one can feel personal overtones with the Lee Marvin character!
To fully appreciate this film because it's tame now in comparison to other war films as of late, one would have to be familiar with the original book that it came from also called "The Big Red One" written by Samuel Fuller, the same man who directed this, whose aside of his movie accomplishments, also served in the division and directed this film like an autobiography! One of it's problems is that it's not as heavy handed as it can be, since his creative differences may have been compromised with the studio /producers in terms of how realistic war can be shown, compared to what one can get nowadays like "Saving Private Ryan", but is still resonating enough when so much more can be offered if it wasn't for the people financing it!
