King vidor does such an excellent job of highlighting the comic details in life before offsetting them with the typical tragedies of formula storytelling. an amazing early war film that was clearly a primary influence of 'all quiet on the western front.
' structurally, the films are almost identical, save for a somewhat happier, though bittersweet ending.
