Review of The Big Heat (1953) by Roy P — 13 Jul 2007
One of the most brutal and tough film noirs! The plot itself is fairly straight-forward but Lang adds some truly unexpected moments of shocking brutality and depressingly bleak occurrences that throw the viewer off balance and play with the genre conventions.
The film does become overly melodramatic at points, and the acting can become over the top at times, but Lee Marvin is dead on as one of the most cruel and sadistic thugs ever and brings a harsh and intense tone to the screen whenever he is present.
This noir is essential viewing despite its lapses in forced emotions... we simply can't take our eyes off this intense crime thriller!
