Review of The Big Heat (1953) by Waldo I — 09 Jun 2009
I'm not sure when the "renegade cop" archetype was popularized, but this movie is Dirty Harry's senior by almost two decades. Glenn Ford plays a pretty lame hard-boiled hero (at the start, he's a family man and a conventional police detective), but after his wife gets car-bombed he decides, "Screw it, I'm gonna go kill myself some Lee Marvin." Yeah, that's right, Lee fucking Marvin. Now don't you want to see it?
Decent action setpieces, solid direction... not the best noir I've seen, but definitely not the worst.
