Review of The Big Heat (1953) by Masorad ( — 06 May 2010
Ford's character Bannion prefigures the 70s "Death Wish" genre of pix, in that you got a guy who (extralegally) sets things right & exacts vengeance while exposing the corruption-riddled state of society at large.
It's a radical conservative's fairy tale, and great fun to watch. Glenn Ford almost continuously seethes, poor Gloria Grahame gets some great lines & coffee she didn't order, Marvin excels as the heavy.
Lang's hand is professional here, but really only functional. Worth spoiling by revealing that every woman Bannion meets dies.
