Review of The Big Heat (1953) by Brad G — 10 Aug 2010
"Get out of here while you can still walk." A fierce film noir that sees quintessential family man Glen Ford transform into a monster of revenge raging through his corrupt police department and all the way to the mobster puppet master.
Ford is stunning. He's stone. As one character states, he's on a "hate-binge" and it is honestly hard to watch him physically unleash his anger. And Gloria Grahame has what must be one of the most striking roles of this era; her own hate fueled evolution is just as stunning as Ford's.
Plus, Lee Marvin's womanizing goon is the perfect antagonist for both Ford and Grahame. Nearly a pitch perfect film. VF.
