Review of The Big Combo (1955) by Stephen C — 23 Aug 2009
Classic film noir ,with some neat touches to add to the usual Noir types.
Cornell Wilde is serviceable as Lt Diamond who is determined to bring Mr Brown (Richard Conte) to justice.
What makes this film standout is John Altons camerawork.
Alton is today widely regarded as one of the best Director of Photography of his generation, and here his techical genius is on display,be it a dark alley or a fogbound airport.
He is helped by director Joseph H Lewis who has a good eye and packs the film with standout moments,be it a botched murder or a silent killing Lewis gives the film that typical raw noir edge.
If you need a foot up into the wonderful world of film noir then this is one film which will give you all the knowledge you need.
