Review of The Big Chill (1983) by Paul J — 23 Jul 2013
A chamber film with a collection of characters that are believable, funny and quite moving. After the success of writing Raiders and Empire, Kasdan was able to do whatever he wanted. This little film surprised everyone.
In the tradition of John Sayles' films, it became fairly influential and highly acclaimed upon its release. All the actors are appealing and at its heart. it's about how we grow up, change and sometimes end up with very differing opinions.
The "big chill" relates not only to their dead friend (played by Kevin Costner in a deleted scene) but also the chilling realization that someone's morals can be so utterly different from your own.
Ultimately, it's a remarkably honest, romantic and nostalgic film. The soundtrack is exemplary..
