Review of The Big Chill (1983) by Brian S — 09 Sep 2010
A decent enough movie. a simple story of old friends coming together for a weekend after one of their old gang commits suicide. impressive acting talent, and overall chemistry and camaraderie was excellent.
and of course the soundtrack is outstanding. the writing, though, lacks conflict for me. other than old friends catching up, there doesn't seem to be much driving the story. there's certainly drama present, but it's all mostly suppressed; which I guess mirrors real life a lot of the time, but I don't watch movies to see people doing what I could do in my own living room.
I also thought the characters seemed a bit forced...like the story was molding them instead of the other way around. flaws notwithstanding though, this is still a solidly entertaining movie with great humour, great music, and a touch of homey familiarity.
