Review of The BFG (2016) by Lewis E — 06 Dec 2016
Never read 'The BFG' despite being on the receiving end of its use as a nickname in school (apparently I was tall for my age). Judging by this movie, it is definitely a story better appreciated when a child since it requires a lot of their ambitious imagination and emotion.
I still feel the movie accentuates the 'friendly' aspect excessively by diluting the darker element of man-eating giants to the point where you don't really believe the threat. Ruby Barnhill performs well as a child actor and the BFG character is created with appropriate innocence to make him endearing to viewers.
However, the events and interactions are too simplistic to engage the adult brain. Good-spirited themes, colourful visuals and scenes of green flatulence will amuse the young target audience but this BFG was not entertained.
