Review of The BFG (2016) by Bryanbezter — 22 Apr 2020
The visual effects are great and beautiful when they are not integrated with real-life humans.
Weaknesses of the movie:
1. The visual effects look fake when they are integrated with real-life humans.
2. The story is not appealing. The scope is also small.
3. The lead characters are not interesting nor empowering.
4. It should go full fantasy, without involvement of the Queen's army. They are even introduced almost at the end of the movie and feels so not related.
5. The way the bad giants are defeated is very disappointing.
6. I personally think that the title 'BFG' is not really appealing or informative.
Debatable holes:
1. When a bad giant stepped on the cars, they should have not been able to sustain the giants' weight and been destroyed right away (tires, roof, etc).
2. Sophie should have not been able to steer the car because the giant was very heavy. The steer was supposed to be very heavy as well.
3. When the bad giants bullied BFG by throwing him, he should have been dead or at least got extremely injured (or at least got dizzy).
4. How could BFG find Sophie's glasses on the grass? It was very small and it was not like Sophie could not live without them. Also, it was too small and fragile for him to hold it, or even put in his pocket.
5. The BFG should have been seen by people. He was very loud.
6. Where did BFG hide when he put Sophie back to the orphanage?
7. Why was the blanket so smelly for the giants, considering that Sophie only wore it for a short moment and it had already been hours since the last time Sophie wore it. Moreover, it was rainy.
8. If the giants' noses were so powerful, they should have been able to find Sophie in BFG's house.
9. The queen believed in her dream, Sophie and BFG too easily and quickly.
10. The queen's guards were not prepared. It took a while before they were ready to face BFG.
11. It was very unintelligent to bring BFG inside the queen's palace.
12. The sound of helicopter was very loud, therefore the bad giants should have seen it coming.
13. Sophie ran too fast when she tried to put the dream to the bad giants.
14. Why did the queen, generals, and her people easily take the green drink and drink it right away? They should have tested it first before giving it to the queen, because it could be poisonous or allergic.
15. Why did the queen put her men on the line just to face the bad giants? It was not a national emergency. They barely knew the location and way to get there, or even BFG and the enemies.
16. The BFG was too heavy to sit on the piano. Also, the piano and BFG were too heavy for the people to push.
17. How could the queen's people have a giant fork and cup?
18. Why did the queen question about bubbles going down?
19. The bad giants could just swim back to other islands. It did not solve the problem.
20. There were not many cases where the bad giants kidnapped and ate the queen's people.
21. If the giants could really go to the village, they should have been there more often and more cases should have been found.
22. Where did the queen find out about and find the seeds for the bad giants to eat?
23. How could the helicopters be strong enough to lift the giants?
24. How could the giants be so easily defeated?
Message from the movie:
It is very sad to live alone (like BFG) or feel lonely (like Sophie). It is good to always have a friend who understands and listens to us.
